What IS a Pre-Roll, Really? And Why Are Ours So Much Better?

Understanding Pre-Rolls: Definition, Purpose, and Composition

Pre-rolls, shorthand for a pre-rolled “joint” or cannabis cigarette were one of the earliest forms of legal cannabis available to medical patients. Today they remain a convenient starting point in your dispensary experience. While other smoking methods require additional accessories (a pipe, a vape battery, or a grinder, not to mention some hand coordination), a light is all you need with your pre-roll purchase. To make a pre-roll, typically flower is ground and rolled into a paper cone and then twisted shut. Pre-rolls can be either THC or CBD or a strain with some combination. The type of flower in the pre-roll can vary greatly, as well as the quality. Many companies use trimmings rather than premium flower in their cigarettes.

Farnsworth “pre-rolls” aren’t like the other pre-rolls. We have so completely re-thought every aspect, they barely even qualify in the same category, but technically sure, they a cannabis cigarette that comes pre-rolled.

So what’s different about ours?

  • They are not cones. They are elegant, even tubes. We have developed a highly propritary method of processing the flower so as to create the perfect smoking experience.

  • We use only high quality, whole flower. A lot of pre-rolls use the 2nd rate parts of the plant that aren’t as good. Filets only at Farnsworth.

  • The Filter: No one else uses a filter and the filter is everything. It filters out the harsh particulates and makes the smoke a satin-y smooth draw. The filter also makes it far more easy to hold and smoke. “Oh but does it not filter out the THC?” you might ask. It does not. It’s specially created to let the THC particles right on through.

Pre-Rolls vs. Other Forms of Smoking: Cigarettes, Blunts, and Flower

The traditional pre-roll is typically selected for being the most user-friendly since you don’t need to own any accessories or know how to roll your own joint. The sensation is also less harsh than smoking from a pipe or blunt. However, traditional pre-rolls also have a bad reputation for their low quality. Many brands use trimmings, which have less flavor and are less potent than the whole cannabis flower.

Farnsworth Fine Cannabis Cigarettes are more pleasurable to smoke than a typical joint or pre-roll, not only because of the quality of the flower but also because of the design, which feels like a cigarette to the touch and smokes more smoothly than the typical joint as well thanks to the high flow filter. The filter removes harmful particles in the smoke without removing any THC content. Although we call them cigarettes due to their appearance and the sensation of smoking them, they do not contain any tobacco. While most traditional pre-rolls contain hybrid strains, Farnsworth Fine Cigarettes are available in three categories– Light, Bold, and Classic. Light is a cerebral, uplifting high; Classic is a traditional hybrid; and Bold is a more potent, relaxing body high.

The Future is Now

THC Content of Pre-Rolls

THC is the primary psychoactive ingredient in the cannabis flower, producing the intoxicating feeling associated with the plant. Pre-rolls can vary significantly in terms of THC content, from about 1% to 40%, and if you are seeking a pre-roll as an entry point to cannabis use, it can be helpful to start with lower-THC content. The Farnsworth Light, for example, contains 14% THC, which is a good entry point, whereas the Bold contains 30%, better suited for more experienced smokers.

Types of Cannabis Pre-Rolls and How to Choose

Pre-rolls are rarely strain specific and typically sold as either Sativa, Indica, or Hybrid. While the effects can range, Sativa is generally a more uplifting, mental high, while Indica is a more soothing body high, and hybrids are somewhere in between. Which you pick has as much to do with personal preference as intended use. For sleep and pain relief, many people prefer Indica, whereas, for socializing and creative work, many people prefer Sativa.

Are Pre-Rolls Good for Beginners?

Pre-rolls are a great starting point for anyone looking to get into cannabis since all you need to do is light it and you will feel effects almost instantly (in about two to ten minutes). The most intense part of the high from smoking also tends to not last as long as other consumption methods like edibles, so it is good if you are nervous about how the effects will feel.

However, take care to note that some pre-rolls are “infused” which means they also contain cannabis concentrates like resin or hash which will make them much stronger than a regular pre-roll, and better suited for experts or at least people with some experience consuming cannabis.

Farnsworth Buying Guide: How to Purchase Pre-Rolls

Some questions to ask when purchasing pre-rolls are whether the flower is whole flower or trimmings and when it was packed (the packing date is usually listed on the package). If you are in a dispensary like Farnsworth, where you can touch and smell products, more aroma typically indicates higher quality and freshness. If you are starting with cannabis, it is essential to ask about THC content and request a strain that contains a high percentage of CBD, which helps to counteract any potential adverse reactions.
