Thom Reed - UFO Monument Park
The UFO Monument Park in Covered Bridge Ln, Sheffield, MA 01257 is the brainchild of Thom Reed, a long-time UFO researcher. In addition to the 5,000-pound granite monument, there is a plaque that reads "Our nation's first off-world/UFO incident." The park is also home to solar lamp posts and benches. Reed's efforts have been vindicated by both the historical society and the state governor. However, the town has recently removed the statue from the site following legal wranglings.
While UFOs have occupied a fringe position in American culture, many believers have been labeled as tin-hat conspiracy theorists. Nevertheless, recent surveys have shown that the number of Americans who believe in the phenomenon is rising. In one study, 36 percent of Americans believe that aliens have visited earth. Today, Reed's UFO Monument Park is a popular filming location.
But not everyone is satisfied with this development. Reed has retained a lawyer, and his nonprofit plans to fight the town's actions. He says he is just as responsible for the monument's placement as the other parties. For instance, email exchanges between the town and Reed show that the town played a role in choosing the new location of the monument. The town Department of Public Works crews then moved the monument there.
The Cash-Landrum incident occurred on December 29, 1980. Vickie Landrum and Betty Cash were driving home from dinner when they noticed a strange object floating over their neighborhood. Both reported seeing the diamond-shaped craft, which expelled tremendous heat and struggled to remain in the air. They said that they then watched two tandem-rotor Chinook helicopters surround the craft. They reported health problems after the encounter. In fact, the witnessing witnesses later filed a $20 million lawsuit against the U.S. government over the incident.
The UFO incident has long fascinated people. It has even been the subject of numerous TV shows and movies. Although some people may dismiss the evidence as far-fetched, Thom Reed and his team have tirelessly pursued recognition for the place of its occurrence. And they've done so for more than a decade.
After opening the UFO Monument Park in 2015, Reed met Silliker and Pinsonnault. They were able to build a relationship with Reed, and have visited the site on several occasions since. They expect Reed to be able to build more interest in the UFO Monument Park. Currently, Reed has finished filming "Mission Declassified" for the Travel Channel, and has a book and television series in the works. Learn more here.
